Through the Bardo
In Tibetan buddhism, the Bardo is the transitional time between death and rebirth. Traveling between two worlds and existing in an in-between state are the experience of the Bardo.
This emotional and psychological world is also a topography familiar to anyone who has experienced grief or loss. I created these paintings in reaction to such circumstances, working with imagery rooted in childhood, a consistent and long-standing motif in my work. Sources of comfort (stuffed animals, pets, flowers) and images of highway travel are rendered surreal with a stripped-down palette, throwing the focus on shadow and light, night and day - visually and metaphorically.
